Custom Name Badges Guide: Magnetic vs Pin, Reusable vs Engraved

A name badge is a small uniform — it has to look consistent across a whole team and survive daily wear without damaging garments. This guide walks through the badge types, the all-important attachment choice, and how to personalize a large team in one order. For specs and pricing, see custom name badges.

Badge types: engraved, printed, enamel-logo, reusable

Engraved metal badges have names laser-cut into brass or steel — permanent and premium. Full-color printed badges (on aluminum or acrylic) are lowest cost and good for events. Enamel-logo badges combine a hard-enamel brand shell with an engraved or printed name plate. Reusable window-insert badges hold a printed paper name card that slides out, so the same badge serves rotating or temporary staff.

The key decision: magnetic vs pin vs clip

This is the choice buyers most often get wrong. Magnetic backs hold securely through a shift but never pierce fabric — essential for blazers, polos and knitwear, and the default for hospitality and corporate uniforms. Butterfly-clutch pins are cheapest but leave a hole. Bulldog / alligator clips suit lanyards and thick garments and are easy to swap. Many clients spec a magnet-plus-pin combo back for security.

Materials and finishes

Brass with gold, silver or rose-gold plating reads most premium and pairs with a hard-enamel logo and a glossy epoxy dome over the name. Stainless steel and brushed aluminum give a clean modern look. Printed aluminum keeps high-volume event badges cheap. A doming layer over the name protects it from scuffing during daily wear.

Personalizing a whole team at scale

The trick to a consistent rollout is to build the branded shell (logo, colors, layout) once, then personalize each badge with the individual name by laser engraving or printing. That keeps a 200-person order perfectly on-brand while every badge is unique. Send us the staff name list as a spreadsheet and we handle the variable data.

MOQ, lead time and ordering

MOQ is 100 pieces per design for the branded shell, with names personalized per piece. Sampling runs 5–7 days and bulk 10–18 days. Name badges pair naturally with lapel pins and custom lanyards for a complete staff-credential program. Send your logo and the staff list for a 12-hour quote.
