Lapel Pin Attachment Types: Butterfly vs Rubber vs Magnetic

Four attachment types

Most B2B buyers don’t think about pin attachment until they’ve already approved the artwork — at which point they realize the attachment they specified (or didn’t specify) was wrong for the use case. Here’s a quick guide so you get it right the first time.

Butterfly clutch

Cost: Included (standard). Best for: Conferences, events, casual wear, anywhere the pin will be removed regularly. Avoid for: Premium corporate gifts (looks cheap), permanent uniform pins (can come loose).

The classic two-wing metal clutch that everyone recognizes. It’s included with every pin we make unless you specify otherwise. Reliable, easy to use, easy to replace if lost.

Rubber clutch

Cost: $0.05-0.10 more than butterfly. Best for: Senior audiences, anyone with arthritis or limited fine-motor control, kids’ pins (no sharp metal wings). Avoid for: Premium executive gifts (utilitarian appearance).

Soft rubber alternative to butterfly. Easier to grip, gentler on the pin’s post (so the rubber doesn’t scratch the plating), and preferred by older recipients who find butterfly clutches fiddly.

Magnetic backing

Cost: $0.30-0.50 more than butterfly. Best for: Hospitality uniforms, corporate event attire, premium gifting where fabric damage matters. Avoid for: Cost-sensitive promotional pins, lapel pins worn on thick fabrics like wool overcoats (magnet may not hold).

Two rare-earth magnets replace the metal post. The pin attaches by sandwiching the fabric between the magnet on the back of the pin and a small magnet plate inside the garment. No piercing, no permanent hole.

Magnetic backing is now the standard for premium hospitality uniforms (no fabric damage to the £800 wool uniform jacket) and for executive recognition pins where the recipient may want to wear it on multiple jackets without each one getting pierced.

Safety-pin back

Cost: Standard for button badges only. Best for: Button badges, fundraising ribbons, event badges, low-cost promotional pins. Avoid for: Anything with a metal pin face (looks unprofessional).

The traditional button-badge mechanism — a sprung steel pin attached to the back of a tin-plate badge. Cheap, immediate, no separate clutch needed. Standard for round 25-75mm button badges.

When to specify each

Default to butterfly clutch unless you have a specific reason to change. It works for 80% of B2B use cases at no extra cost.

Switch to rubber clutch when your end-users include older adults, kids, or anyone with limited fine-motor control.

Upgrade to magnetic backing for premium corporate / hospitality programs where fabric damage matters or the recipient will wear the pin on multiple garments.

Use safety-pin back only for traditional button badges. For modern enamel and die-struck pins, safety-pin looks dated.
